October 2009

The Goldseker Foundation has generously awarded the Greektown CDC with the Strategic Management Assistance Grant to fund the creation of a Strategic Plan Volume 3. As many of you know our most recent Strategic Plan was completed in 2004 and since then we have met most of our goals and created many new ones. The Strategic Plan Volume 3 will incorporate the goals set forth by the community and stakeholders of Greektown in the previous plans and add major focus on land use planning. The Strategic Plan will help guide the community, City, non-profit and private sector interest in the revitalization and redevelopment of Greektown! We are very grateful for the Goldseker foundation and their investment in the Greektown community.

We at the CDC believe that true community development happens through mentoring our children and providing them opportunities for better education. Imagine the positive impact that an entire neighborhood of youth aspiring to be doctors, lawyers and teachers would have on our community. This is why the Greektown CDC has recently partnered with John Ruhrah Elementary/Middle School to facilitate a new program that will create opportunities for middle school students to develop mentoring relationships with Johns Hopkins University and Stevenson University college students. Our first mentoring day was on October 1st, 2009 in which we took a large group of 8th graders to the Johns Hopkins Homewood Campus for a tour, lunch with college students and a lecture from a University leader. The event was a great success! We are excited to start this new partnership and look forward to watching it expand to other universities. Please call our office for more information.

The Greektown CDC is fortunate to have great friends like Stevenson University. Recently, a group of students from Stevenson University participated in a clean-up to help us in our efforts in Greektown. If you are interested in participating or organizing a clean up, please feel free to call our office for help!
